Gerardo Leal, Cocaine Smuggling Attempt, Texas 2017

Gerardo Leal, a 33-year-old U.S. citizen living in Mexico, is headed to federal prison after attempting to drive five kilograms of cocaine through the Gateway port of entry in Brownsville, Texas. On June 15, 2017, Leal pulled up in a Mazda 3, claiming he was on his way to Sun Loan Company—story officers didn’t buy.

Customs agents sent Leal to secondary inspection and moved the vehicle onto a lift for a closer look. That’s when Leal snapped—spotted the heat, bolted on foot toward the Mexican border. He didn’t make it. Officers caught him before he crossed back, wrestled him down, and cuffed him amid resistance.

Once Leal was secured, agents tore into the Mazda. Hidden in a false compartment inside the center console—nearly invisible to the untrained eye—was 5 kilograms of pure cocaine. The haul, street-valued in the hundreds of thousands, was meant to flood neighborhoods north of the border.

Leal pleaded guilty on July 19, 2017. U.S. District Judge Rolando Olvera handed down a 36-month federal prison sentence, followed by two years of supervised release. ‘No matter the difficulties Leal may encounter, he should do some prison time,’ Judge Olvera said. ‘There was no reason that existed in this world to break the law.’

The investigation was led by Homeland Security Investigations, part of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Assistant U.S. Attorney Elena Salinas prosecuted the case, pushing for accountability in a region where cartel runners test the system daily.

Leal remains in custody, awaiting transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility. His attempt to slip poison across the border is over. The feds made sure of that.
