Andrew Dean Bailey, 32, of Germantown, Maryland, is headed to federal prison for a decade after being caught with nearly 100 grams of cocaine, multiple firearms, and nearly $16,000 in drug cash. U.S. District Judge George J. Hazel handed down the 10-year sentence on Thursday, followed by three years of supervised release, slamming Bailey for brazenly dealing drugs under the protection of a loaded .40 caliber handgun.
The takedown unfolded on March 23, 2017, when federal and local agents stormed Bailey’s Germantown residence with a search warrant. Inside, they found a loaded .40 caliber handgun, extra rounds of Winchester ammunition, and a stash of narcotics: 96 grams of cocaine, 3 grams of alprazolam, and 1 gram of morphine pills. Also seized: $15,900 in cash—deemed drug-trafficking proceeds by investigators.
Bailey admitted in court documents that he intended to sell the cocaine and kept the firearm specifically to protect his narcotics and cash. The plea agreement makes clear: this wasn’t casual drug possession. It was distribution with firepower close at hand. His admission underscores a dangerous pattern—armed drug dealers operating in suburban neighborhoods with little regard for public safety.
But Bailey had no right to be anywhere near a gun. Prior to the raid, he had been convicted of a felony punishable by more than a year in prison, stripping him of the legal right to possess firearms or ammunition. That prior conviction turned what might have been a drug case into a federal felon-in-possession charge, ratcheting up the penalties.
Judge Hazel didn’t hesitate. Along with the 10-year prison term, he ordered the forfeiture of the $15,900, the loaded handgun, and all seized ammunition. The decision sends a message: federal prosecutors will aggressively pursue firearm violations tied to drug operations, especially when felons are armed and dealing at scale.
The case was investigated by the DEA’s Washington Field Division, Montgomery County Police, and Gaithersburg Police. Acting U.S. Attorney Stephen M. Schenning credited the agencies for dismantling Bailey’s operation and thanked Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael Packard and Timothy Hagan for securing the conviction. Bailey now begins a decade behind bars—time served not for a one-time mistake, but for choosing to traffic poison and brandish power with a loaded gun.
