Gettysburg Mail Thief Caught Red-Handed
HARRISBURG, PA – In a brazen case of mail theft, 54-year-old Harry Hartman of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty on June 24, 2025, to stealing packages from the Gettysburg Post Office.
According to Acting U.S. Attorney John C. Gurganus, the mail delivery room at Gettysburg College began receiving complaints in February 2023 that packages marked as ‘delivered’ or ‘out for delivery’ were not received. The issues quieted down during the summer months but ramped back up in mid-October.
At his guilty plea hearing, Hartman admitted to stealing packages from the Gettysburg Post Office and reselling the contents on eBay. He also consented to a search of his car and residence, where agents found a large cardboard box full of stolen items not yet sold.
The case was investigated by the United States Postal Service, Office of Inspector General and the United States Postal Inspection Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney K. Wesley (‘Wes’) Mishoe is prosecuting the case.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is five years imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, a fine, and the imposition of a special assessment. A sentence following a finding of guilt is imposed by a court after consideration of the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
Hartman’s guilty plea is a stark reminder of the importance of protecting our mail system from thieves like him. The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities immediately.
