Texas Man Admits to Smuggling Iranians
A 62-year-old man, Gholamreza Hosseinpour, from Fairfax, Virginia, pleaded guilty to attempting to smuggle two Iranian citizens into the country in a brazen human trafficking operation.
Hosseinpour admitted to transporting two individuals who had crossed into the United States from Mexico, and he faces up to five years of imprisonment and a possible $250,000 maximum fine when he is sentenced on June 9, 2022.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Hosseinpour flew from Virginia to Texas on December 19, 2021, rented a vehicle in San Antonio, and drove to McAllen to pick up the two individuals. He then drove them to the Javier Vega Jr. Border Patrol checkpoint near Sarita, where they were stopped by authorities.
When questioned by law enforcement, the two individuals could not answer questions about their citizenship, leading authorities to determine that they were from Iran and illegally present in the United States.
Hosseinpour was permitted to remain on bond pending his sentencing hearing, where he will face the consequences of his actions.
The investigation was conducted by the Border Patrol, and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Dennis Robinson and Molly Smith are prosecuting the case.
