BUFFALO, N.Y. – Christopher Gostick, 30, of Lancaster, New York, is staring down a potentially decades-long federal prison sentence after admitting to receiving and possessing child pornography, and engaging in predatory behavior towards young girls. U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross announced Gostick’s guilty plea today before U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara.
The case, a chilling example of repeat offending, carries a mandatory minimum of 15 years behind bars, with a maximum sentence of 40 years and a $250,000 fine. Gostick’s prior conviction in August 2019 on a state charge of Attempted Possessing a Sexual Performance by a Child Less than 16 significantly elevates the stakes.
The current investigation, spearheaded by Homeland Security Investigations and the Buffalo Police Department, revealed a disturbing pattern of abuse. On June 9 and 10, 2023, Gostick attended a sleepover birthday party where he kissed a nine-year-old victim (Minor Victim 1) on the lips. When the child confided in her parents, authorities were alerted. A search of Gostick’s cellular telephones and a tablet unveiled a trove of depravity.
Investigators discovered a surreptitiously recorded video of Minor Victim 1 using the bathroom on one of Gostick’s phones. Even more disturbing, another phone contained a screen recording of a Snapchat conversation with a second minor victim (Minor Victim 2), then 10 years old. Gostick, posing as an 11-year-old female, explicitly solicited a sexually explicit video from Minor Victim 2 – and received it. The digital forensics team also recovered approximately 613 images and two additional videos depicting child pornography on Gostick’s devices.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas A. C. Penrose, handling the prosecution, laid out the evidence before Judge Arcara. The details paint a grim picture of a predator exploiting vulnerable children, both through direct contact and online manipulation. The investigation highlights the ongoing threat of online exploitation and the vital role of law enforcement in protecting minors.
Gostick’s sentencing is scheduled for October 4, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. before Judge Arcara. He will likely face the full weight of the law given his prior conviction and the severity of the crimes committed. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking in both the physical and digital worlds, and the need for constant vigilance to safeguard our children.
