Joe Adam Vega, Impeding Border Patrol, Texas 2014

A Greenville man has pleaded guilty to impeding border patrol agents at a checkpoint in Laredo, Texas.

Joe Adam Vega, 25, was arrested in July 2014 after refusing to comply with instructions from border patrol agents.

According to court records, Vega arrived at the checkpoint on July 29, 2014, and was directed to move to the secondary inspection area after a canine alerted to the presence of drugs or hidden persons in his vehicle’s trunk.

However, Vega refused to comply, saying he wanted to go on his way without permitting additional inspections.

Agents warned him that he would be arrested for violating federal laws if he did not move as directed, but Vega insisted on driving away without inspection.

His passenger attempted to lock the driver’s door and roll up the windows, leading agents to forcibly remove both occupants from the vehicle and arrest them.

Vega faces up to 1 year in prison and a possible $100,000 fine at his sentencing, set for December 3, 2014.

The case was investigated by the Border Patrol and Homeland Security Investigations, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Raul Guerra prosecuting the case.
