Local Attorney Sentenced to Prison for Tax Evasion

BOSTON – A Greenfield attorney was sentenced to prison for tax evasion, marking a major blow to the legal community. Gregory Olchowski, 57, was found guilty of four counts of tax evasion and sentenced to six months in prison, followed by one year of supervised release, six months of which will be served in home confinement, and an $8,000 fine.

Between Jan. 1, 2003 and Dec. 9, 2011, Olchowski evaded the proper assessment of his federal income taxes for four separate tax years. He arranged to receive income in the form of cash and checks to third-parties for his own benefit, which he did not intend to report to the Internal Revenue Service. The scheme was extensive and involved filing individual income tax returns that did not report this income, concealing documents concerning this unreported income, and providing materially false information to IRS criminal agents.

Olchowski’s crimes were uncovered through a thorough investigation by the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigations in Boston. United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz and William P. Offord, Special Agent in Charge of the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigations in Boston, made the announcement today. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Steven H. Breslow of Ortiz’s Springfield Branch Office.

Before his sentencing, Olchowski closed his law practice and repaid the IRS $148,805 in taxes, interest and penalties based upon his tax evasion. This move was seen as a last-ditch effort to mitigate his punishment, but ultimately failed to sway the judge.

As a result of his crimes, Olchowski will serve six months in prison, followed by one year of supervised release, with six months of that time to be served in home confinement. He will also pay an $8,000 fine. The sentence is a harsh reminder of the consequences of tax evasion and the importance of honesty when dealing with the IRS.

The sentencing of Gregory Olchowski serves as a warning to others who may be considering tax evasion. It is a crime that carries severe penalties, including prison time and hefty fines. We urge all individuals to take their tax obligations seriously and report all income accurately.

The case against Olchowski is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigations in Boston. Their tireless efforts have brought a tax evader to justice, and we commend them for their outstanding work.

Gregory Olchowski’s sentencing marks the end of a long and complex case. His crimes will not be forgotten, and we hope that his punishment will serve as a deterrent to others who may be considering similar actions.
