Cocaine Smuggling on Cruise Ship

Orlando, Florida – In a shocking case of international drug trafficking, Isherman Tafari, a 32-year-old national of Grenada, pleaded guilty to importing 5 kilograms or more of cocaine into the United States.

According to the plea agreement, on June 20, 2014, Tafari departed Port Canaveral on an eight-day cruise to the southern Caribbean. When the ship returned to Port Canaveral on June 28, 2014, federal agents and local law enforcement officers searched Tafari’s luggage and discovered packages containing a white, powdery substance that tested positive for cocaine. The gross weight of the cocaine was determined to be approximately 5,450 grams.

U.S. Attorney A. Lee Bentley, III announced Tafari’s guilty plea, stating that the defendant faces a minimum mandatory penalty of 10 years, up to life, in federal prison. This severe punishment serves as a stark reminder of the gravity of cocaine smuggling and the importance of law enforcement efforts in combating this menace.

The investigation was conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, with Assistant United States Attorney Embry J. Kidd prosecuting the case.

Cocaine smuggling on cruise ships is a growing concern, with many vessels serving as conduits for illicit narcotics. This case highlights the need for increased scrutiny and cooperation between law enforcement agencies to prevent such crimes.

As the investigation unfolds, it is clear that Tafari’s actions were part of a larger conspiracy to bring cocaine into the United States. His guilty plea is a significant step towards dismantling this network and bringing those responsible to justice.
