DANIEL GONZALEZ-MUNGUIA, Pentobarbital Importation, Illinois 2023

CHICAGO – A federal grand jury has slammed drug charges against a Mexican national accused of fueling despair with a deadly delivery service. DANIEL GONZALEZ-MUNGUIA, also known as “Alejandro Vasquez,” 40, of Puebla, Mexico, stands accused of illegally importing the dangerous drug Pentobarbital into the United States from Mexico, allegedly catering to those contemplating suicide.

The superseding indictment, unsealed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Chicago, alleges that GONZALEZ-MUNGUIA was engaged in the import and distribution of a controlled substance. If convicted, he faces a potential sentence of up to 60 years in federal prison. He is currently in U.S. custody, awaiting arraignment. The case is being led by Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, Morris Pasqual, alongside Sean Fitzgerald of Homeland Security Investigations, and Ruth Mendonça, Inspector-in-Charge of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

The grim details paint a picture of a calculated operation. Authorities say GONZALEZ-MUNGUIA ran an online business specifically to sell and distribute Pentobarbital – known as Nembutal – to individuals across the U.S. and around the globe who were wrestling with suicidal thoughts. Pentobarbital is legally sold in Mexico for animal euthanasia, but is a controlled substance in the United States and has a dark history of use in state-sponsored executions. Law enforcement uncovered numerous parcels originating from Mexico, allegedly shipped by the defendant.

The investigation wasn’t limited to tracking packages. Authorities in the U.S. and several foreign countries – including Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Ireland, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom – conducted welfare checks on individuals who had received the drug. Many admitted to ordering Pentobarbital through email addresses linked to GONZALEZ-MUNGUIA while battling depression. Law enforcement intervened, offering assistance. Tragically, others were found deceased after receiving shipments, including cases in Illinois and other states and countries.

This wasn’t a victimless crime. While the indictment details the alleged scheme, it’s a stark reminder of the desperation driving individuals to seek such a final solution. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kartik K. Raman is prosecuting the case, and officials emphasize the investigation is ongoing, suggesting further details and potential co-conspirators may emerge. U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Illinois Army National Guard Counterdrug Program, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas also provided valuable assistance.

It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is merely an accusation. DANIEL GONZALEZ-MUNGUIA is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. But the charges are a chilling indictment of a business built on the despair of others, and a stark warning about the dark corners of the internet and the global flow of dangerous substances. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it unfolds.
