Newark Man Sentenced to 47 Years for Gunpoint Carjackings

A Newark man has been sentenced to 564 months in prison for his role in three gunpoint carjackings and an attempted carjacking within a 10-day period. Jamie Manning, 31, was convicted on all nine counts of a superseding indictment, including conspiracy to commit theft of a motor vehicle by force, violence and intimidation, carjacking, and using a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.

Manning was convicted following a six-day trial before U.S. District Judge William H. Walls, who imposed the sentence today in Newark federal court. Manning and an accomplice, Corey Thermitus, 24, of Newark, committed the crimes between December 20 and 28, 2012.

According to documents filed in the case, the first carjacking occurred on December 20, 2012, when Manning and Thermitus approached the owner of a 2004 Honda Accord. Manning pressed a firearm into the victim’s side and demanded the keys to the car. Manning and Thermitus took the victim’s keys and purse, demanded the PIN to the victim’s debit card, and attempted to push the victim into the Accord’s trunk.

On December 26, 2012, Manning and Thermitus approached two individuals entering a parked 2002 Nissan Altima on a street in Newark. Manning pointed a firearm at one of the victims and both Manning and Thermitus ordered the victims to get out of the car. After robbing and threatening the victims, Manning and Thermitus fled the area in the carjacked vehicle.

Thermitus attempted another carjacking on December 28, 2012, when he pointed a firearm at a victim sitting in a 2011 Honda Accord parked in the driveway of a home in Newark. Thermitus ordered the victim out of the car, threatening to shoot the victim. After the victim escaped, Thermitus, Manning, and another man fled the area in the carjacked vehicle.

Thermitus was previously sentenced to 255 months in prison on December 2, 2015, for his role in the carjackings. U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman credited the FBI, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Newark Police Department with the investigation leading to Manning’s sentence. Manning will also serve five years of supervised release following his prison term.
