COLUMBUS, OH – Guadalupe Sanchez-Cruz, 50, of Indianapolis, is headed to federal prison for nearly four years after pleading guilty to possessing a cache of 45 firearms while illegally residing in the United States. The sentence, handed down Thursday by U.S. District Court Judge Michael H. Watson, reflects the seriousness of the crime and the danger posed by illegally armed individuals.
Sanchez-Cruz, originally from Mexico, was a passenger in a truck stopped by law enforcement on January 20th in Ohio. Authorities discovered two boxes containing the weapons – a mix of handguns and rifles, some equipped with high-capacity magazines – carefully wrapped in plastic. The truck was en route from Indiana to New Jersey, raising immediate red flags.
According to court documents, Sanchez-Cruz admitted to being paid to transport the parcels, and acknowledged he suspected the contents were “likely illegal.” The revelation that he knowingly aided in the movement of these weapons, despite his illegal status and the inherent risks, played a significant role in the sentencing. His status as an illegal alien automatically prohibited him from possessing any firearms.
The investigation, spearheaded by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), revealed a clear attempt to move a substantial number of guns across state lines, likely for illicit purposes. While the ultimate destination and intended recipients of the firearms remain under investigation, the sheer quantity suggests a potential connection to larger criminal networks. Special Agent in Charge Daryl S. McCormick highlighted the ATF’s commitment to disrupting such operations.
U.S. Attorney Kenneth L. Parker for the Southern District of Ohio announced the 48-month sentence, emphasizing the importance of holding accountable those who violate federal gun laws. “This case demonstrates our unwavering commitment to protecting our communities from gun violence,” Parker stated. Ohio State Highway Patrol Superintendent Col. Charles A. Jones also participated in the announcement, underlining the collaborative effort between federal and state law enforcement.
Sanchez-Cruz was indicted in February 2023 and entered a guilty plea in April. Assistant United States Attorney Elizabeth A. Geraghty prosecuted the case. The case serves as a stark reminder of the constant flow of illegal weapons and the challenges faced by law enforcement in keeping these guns out of the hands of criminals.
