Guatemalan Cartel Kingpins Busted: Four Extradited for Cocaine Trafficking

In a major blow to international organized crime, four Guatemalan citizens have been extradited to the United States to face serious drug trafficking charges in the Eastern District of Texas.

The extradited individuals are Jorge Luis Rodriguez, 63; Pedro Pablo Yaser Barrios-Cruz, 49; Melvin Hilario Estrada-Flores, 35; and Magner Lopez-Mejia, 45. They allegedly led a Guatemalan-based drug trafficking organization that used U.S. planes to transport cocaine from Venezuela to Guatemala and then to Mexico for ultimate distribution in the United States.

According to court documents, the defendants’ network distributed massive quantities of cocaine monthly, with at least one plane crash in Guatemala resulting in a shootout with local police after more than 1000 kilograms of cocaine were discovered.

This effort is part of a broader Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation, which identifies, disrupts, and dismantles high-level criminal organizations threatening the United States. Additional information about the OCDETF Program can be found at https://www.justice.gov/OCDETF.

The case is being investigated by Homeland Security Investigations’ Dallas, HSI Laredo, and HSI Guatemala Field Offices; Department of Commerce Bureau of Industry and Security; Federal Aviation Administration; and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Air and Marine Operations. The Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs provided significant assistance in securing the defendants’ arrest and extradition to the United States.

The four defendants are being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Rapp. This high-profile case underscores the ongoing struggle against transnational organized crime and the importance of international cooperation in disrupting and dismantling these networks.
