Burlington, Vermont – A Guatemalan man was handed a 12-month sentence this week after being convicted of transporting illegal aliens into the United States. Carlos Alfredo Barrera Vasquez, 31, from Jalapa, Guatemala, pleaded guilty to bringing two adults and two minor children across the U.S.-Canada border.
On November 23, 2024, the U.S. Border Patrol responded to a tip that four individuals had crossed into Vermont from Canada. The agents found Barrera Vasquez’s truck speeding away with multiple occupants. After a high-speed chase, his vehicle collided with a Border Patrol car. Inside were the aliens, including two children who were not properly secured.
Barrera Vasquez attempted to evade law enforcement by running through a stop sign and into an open field. He was caught after the collision. Court records indicate that he had been paid for this illegal transportation service.
Acting U.S. Attorney Michael P. Drescher praised the efforts of the Border Patrol in this case. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jonathan A. Ophardt, Joshua Banker, Katherine Flynn, and Charles W. Kirkham prosecuted the case, while Barrera Vasquez was represented by Assistant Federal Public Defenders Emily Kenyon and Carmen Brooks.
This conviction is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide effort to combat illegal immigration and transnational criminal organizations. The initiative coordinates resources from various Department of Justice task forces, including OCDETFs and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).
