Rudy Adonaldo Chavez, Conspiracy to Commit Murder for Hire, Maryland 2020

Baltimore, Maryland – Baltimore’s streets have seen another grim chapter with the sentencing of Rudy Adonaldo Chavez, 31, of Guatemala. The hard-hitting drug dealer has been sentenced to 97 months in federal prison, plus three years of supervised release, for conspiracy to commit murder for hire and distribution of cocaine.

United States District Judge Richard D. Bennett presided over the sentencing, which was announced by U.S. Attorney Erek L. Barron and Special Agent in Charge James R. Mancuso of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Baltimore.

The plot unraveled when HSI investigators set up a controlled transaction on September 6, 2019. The confidential informant purchased two ounces of cocaine from Chavez for $2,500. Three days later, during another sting, Chavez solicited the informant’s help to murder an individual he claimed had killed two of his friends and shot his brother in Guatemala.

Chavez, who was in the country illegally, engaged in further dialogue with an undercover officer posing as a hitman. He outlined the reasons for the assassination, detailing how the intended victim fled to California after illegal entry into the U.S. He also revealed that he had an associate ready to lure the target from California to Baltimore.

The deal was sealed with a down payment of $2,000 on September 19, 2020, and the plot appeared all but unstoppable until law enforcement intervened. The intended victim was detained in California, averting a tragic crime.

United States Attorney Erek L. Barron commended HSI for their diligent work. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kim Y. Oldham and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Romano were credited with the successful prosecution of the case.
