GRIMY TIMES — Ramon Perez, a 22-year-old illegal alien from Guatemala, was today sentenced to 11 months in federal prison for his role in a conspiracy to smuggle aliens into the United States. Perez, who was living in Waucoma, Iowa, pleaded guilty on August 28, 2014, to one count of conspiracy to transport and induce aliens to reside in the U.S. in violation of the law.
In exchange for his guilty plea, Perez agreed that he conspired with others to encourage aliens to work and reside in Iowa. As part of this criminal enterprise, Perez transported aliens from Colorado to Iowa, where he supervised their labor on construction sites, including grain bins.
Perez faced a stern judgment by United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade in Cedar Rapids, who ordered the defendant to serve his sentence without parole. Following his release, Perez will be under supervised release for an additional three years.
Assistant United States Attorney Daniel C. Tvedt prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigations unit. Perez is currently being held in U.S. Marshal’s custody pending transfer to a federal prison facility.
