ALBUQUERQUE – Guillermo Yanez, 47, a Las Cruces man, was sentenced today to 84 months in federal prison for possessing methamphetamine and fentanyl. The sentence comes after Yanez fled from police attempting to arrest him on an outstanding warrant.
Court documents reveal that on May 15, 2024, Las Cruces Police Department officers tried to apprehend Yanez, who was wanted out of El Paso, Texas, for tampering with evidence in a narcotics case. During the pursuit, Yanez jumped a wall into an apartment complex, attempting to discard contraband. Officers eventually caught him and found methamphetamine in his pocket, along with cash.
A search at the scene yielded a container containing fentanyl-laced pills and powdered fentanyl. Authorities recovered approximately 50 grams of pure methamphetamine and 99 grams of fentanyl. Yanez admitted to possessing the drugs and distributing them to support his habit during an interview after his arrest.
Yanez pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl. Upon release from prison, he will be subject to four years of supervised release.
The case was investigated by the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office, with assistance from the Las Cruces Police Department and the Las Cruces/Doña Ana County Metro Narcotics Agency. Assistant U.S. Attorney Maria Y. Armijo is handling the prosecution.
Acting U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Acting Special Agent in Charge Philip Russell of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office announced the sentence today.
