Gun Threat Lands Man 4 Years in Prison
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – A Jefferson City man has been sentenced to 4 years in federal prison without parole for illegally possessing a firearm.
Demetric Antwan Gaines, 33, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Brian C. Wimes on September 10, 2018, for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Gaines pleaded guilty on May 14, 2018, to possessing a Kahr Arms 9mm semi-automatic pistol on August 8, 2017. A witness claimed that Gaines pulled a black handgun from his waistband, pointed it at her, and threatened her. Officers later found the Kahr Arms 9mm semi-automatic pistol in a locked closet in Gaines’ residence while serving a state search warrant.
Under federal law, it is illegal for anyone who has been convicted of a felony to be in possession of any firearm or ammunition. Gaines has two prior felony convictions for second degree robbery.
This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Lawrence E. Miller. It was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives and the Jefferson City, Missouri Police Department.
Gaines’ 4-year sentence is a reminder of the serious consequences of violating federal firearm laws. The incident not only put the witness in harm’s way but also demonstrated a blatant disregard for the law.
The Jefferson City community can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Gaines will no longer pose a threat to public safety. The case serves as a warning to those who would misuse firearms and underscores the importance of adhering to federal laws and regulations.
