Gun Trafficker Sentenced for 25 Straw Purchases
NORFOLK, Va. – Greilin Eurinio Santana-Munoz, a 31-year-old New Jersey resident and citizen of the Dominican Republic, was sentenced to almost five years in prison for participating in the illegal straw purchase of at least 25 firearms.
According to court documents, Santana-Munoz, a carnival worker and convicted felon, used several straw purchasers to obtain at least 25 handguns from federally licensed gun stores in Virginia and Georgia. Santana-Munoz then shipped the firearms out of the country to the Dominican Republic.
The scheme involved one associate who straw purchased ten handguns from Virginia gun stores in Chantilly, Manassas, and Virginia Beach. Santana-Munoz was arrested in Georgia after ATF agents watched another straw purchaser buy four handguns at a gun store and deliver them to Santana-Munoz while he was waiting outside the store in his boss’s vehicle.
U.S. District Judge Arenda Wright Allen handed down the sentence, which is 57 months in prison. Assistant U.S. Attorney William B. Jackson prosecuted the case.
Raj Parekh, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia; Ashan M. Benedict, Special Agent in Charge of the ATF’s Washington Field Division; and Colonel Gary T. Settle, Superintendent of Virginia State Police, made the announcement after sentencing.
The case is a stark reminder of the dangers of gun trafficking and the efforts of law enforcement to combat it. The sentence is a significant blow to Santana-Munoz’s plans to traffic firearms to the Dominican Republic.
Santana-Munoz’s arrest and sentencing are a testament to the hard work of law enforcement agencies in Virginia and Georgia. The ATF, Virginia State Police, and other agencies worked together to take down Santana-Munoz and dismantle his operation.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia and the ATF are committed to keeping communities safe from gun violence and trafficking. This case is a success story in their efforts to combat gun crime.
