Joseph Fedrick, a 42-year-old citizen of Guyana, admitted in federal court today that he falsified a U.S. passport application in a bid to illegally secure travel documents. The plea, entered in Elkins, West Virginia, marks a direct hit in federal efforts to crack down on identity and document fraud.
Fedrick submitted the fraudulent application in Berkeley County, deliberately including a false Social Security number to bolster his false identity. Authorities say the move was a calculated attempt to bypass federal safeguards and obtain a U.S. passport under false pretenses.
He pled guilty to one count of “False Statement in Application for Passport,” a felony charge that carries a maximum penalty of ten years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Sentencing will follow federal guidelines, weighing both the severity of the offense and Fedrick’s criminal background, if any.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Shawn M. Adkins, who emphasized the government’s zero-tolerance stance toward document fraud. “Submitting false information to obtain a U.S. passport isn’t a paperwork error—it’s a federal crime,” Adkins said in a brief statement after the hearing.
Investigation was led by the Department of State Diplomatic Security Service and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Their joint probe uncovered the inconsistencies in Fedrick’s application, leading to swift federal charges. Details on how Fedrick entered the U.S. or his current immigration status were not disclosed in court.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Trumble presided over the hearing and set sentencing for a later date. Fedrick remains in federal custody pending further proceedings. The case underscores ongoing vulnerabilities exploited by foreign nationals seeking to enter or remain in the United States through fraudulent means.
