Hacker Steals $425,000 from Former Employer

In a shocking case of corporate espionage, Jason Needham, a 45-year-old co-owner of HNA Engineering, has pleaded guilty to unauthorized access of his former employer’s network. Needham’s actions resulted in the theft of proprietary business information worth a staggering $425,000.

According to the indictment, Needham intentionally accessed the network of competing engineering firm Allen & Hoshall without authorization. He used this access to view, download, and copy sensitive business information, including digitally rendered engineering schematics and PDF documents containing project proposals and budgetary documents.

Needham’s hacking spree lasted for nearly two years, during which he repeatedly accessed Allen & Hoshall’s servers to download sensitive information. He also accessed the email account of a former colleague, gaining access to the company’s marketing plans, project proposals, company fee structures, and internal document-sharing system credentials.

The FBI investigated the case, which was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Debra L. Ireland of the Western District of Tennessee and Trial Attorney Timothy C. Flowers of the Criminal Division’s Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section.

Needham is scheduled to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge John T. Fowlkes, Jr. on July 14, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. The full extent of the damage caused by Needham’s actions is still unknown, but one thing is certain – his crimes have earned him a spot in the annals of corporate espionage history.

The case serves as a reminder of the dangers of corporate espionage and the importance of protecting sensitive information. It also highlights the need for robust cybersecurity measures to prevent such breaches from occurring in the future.

In a statement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Tennessee said, ‘The guilty plea of Jason Needham is a significant victory for the victims of his crimes and a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies in protecting our nation’s businesses from cyber threats.’
