Hakeem Burnett, Possessing a Firearm as a Convicted Felon, Mississippi 2019

A Vicksburg man is behind bars after a federal judge handed down a 34-month prison sentence for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, federal officials announced.

Hakeem Burnett, 31, was sentenced in federal court in Jackson, Miss. following an investigation by the FBI and Vicksburg Police Department.

According to court documents, Burnett was apprehended by Vicksburg Police officers and FBI Task Force officers on November 15, 2019, in Vicksburg pursuant to a warrant for violating the Hinds County, Mississippi Drug Court program. At the time of his arrest, Burnett was in possession of a firearm.

Burnett has previous convictions for house burglary and possessing a firearm as a convicted felon, making him a repeat offender.

The case is being prosecuted as part of the joint federal, state, and local Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, which aims to reduce violent crime in the community.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Bert Carraway handled the case, bringing federal charges against Burnett for violating federal law.

The PSN Program is an evidence-based initiative that focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.

As part of the program, law enforcement agencies, courts, and community organizations work together to identify and address the root causes of violent crime in their communities.

Burnett’s sentencing marks another success for the PSN Program, which continues to work towards reducing violent crime in Mississippi.
