MISSOULA — In a stunning admission, former Hamilton man Aaron Lee Grossman, 50, of Washington, Utah, today stood guilty to making false statements to the Social Security Administration (SSA) in an attempt to secure disability payments. U.S. Attorney Jesse Laslovich announced the plea.
Grossman’s deception led him to face a felony charge of false statements to a government agency. If convicted, he could spend up to five years behind bars, pay a fine of $250,000, and serve three years of supervised release. According to court documents, Grossman has agreed to make full restitution, amounting to approximately $71,456, to the SSA.
U.S. District Judge Donald W. Molloy oversaw the arraignment. A sentencing date is scheduled for June 27, with a decision to be made after considering U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other relevant factors. Grossman was released on bail pending further legal proceedings.
The government’s case against Grossman reveals a deliberate attempt to deceive. In 2011, Grossman applied for SSDI payments, which the SSA granted under the condition that he notify them of any changes in his work or medical status. However, in 2019, Grossman earned $36,210 from Lynch Insulation while working through his consulting firm, Grossman Consulting, LLC. He failed to disclose this income on his SSDI Work Activity Report in June 2020, making him ineligible for the benefits he was receiving.
When confronted by SSA agents, Grossman initially claimed that his wife earned the wages from Lynch Insulation. But records from the company indicated otherwise. During an interview in 2021, Grossman admitted to hiding his income to maintain his SSDI benefits.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Karla E. Painter and was investigated by the SSA Office of Inspector General.
