Christopher Hutton, Illegal Firearm Possession, Louisiana 2016

Hammond man CHRISTOPHER HUTTON, 26, is facing federal time after being indicted on charges of illegal firearm possession. The announcement, made today by U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite, lands Hutton in the crosshairs of federal gun laws that bar felons from owning or handling weapons.

The indictment alleges that HUTTON, a convicted felon out of Tangipahoa Parish, possessed a total of eight firearms on two separate dates—June 6 and June 8, 2016. The weapons were recovered during a law enforcement investigation, triggering federal charges that carry serious prison time.

If convicted, HUTTON faces a maximum of ten years behind bars, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release. The charges fall under federal statutes that strictly prohibit individuals with felony convictions from possessing firearms, regardless of the weapon’s condition or intent to use.

U.S. Attorney Polite emphasized that the indictment is not a conviction—but a formal accusation. “The guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt,” Polite stated, underscoring the foundational principle of the justice system even in high-stakes federal cases.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) led the investigation, tracing the firearms to HUTTON through forensic and procedural diligence. Federal prosecutors credit the agency’s persistence for building a case more than seven years after the alleged offenses.

Assistant United States Attorney Jonathan L. Shih is prosecuting the case. Court dates have not yet been scheduled. Federal records show HUTTON remains free pending trial, though conditions of release may be imposed at a later hearing.
