David Michael Reyes, Child Pornography Production, Indiana 2025

HAMMOND, IN – David Michael Reyes, 42, a former director within the Hammond City School System, is facing federal charges following an indictment handed down by a Grand Jury on August 22, 2025. Reyes stands accused of producing, distributing, and possessing child pornography – a betrayal of trust that has shaken the community and prompted a swift response from law enforcement.

Reyes, who held the position of Director of Buildings and Grounds, was arrested on August 15, 2025, and has remained in custody since. The indictment alleges a pattern of horrific behavior, and investigators are currently working to determine the full scope of the alleged crimes. The Hammond City School System has fully cooperated with the investigation, providing access and assistance to federal authorities.

“Today’s charges stem from the quick and coordinated efforts of local and federal law enforcement, with the full cooperation of the Hammond City School System,” stated Acting United States Attorney M. Scott Proctor. “While an indictment is merely an allegation, it is imperative that we ensure we are addressing the full extent of criminal activity when allegations of crimes against children are involved. I am therefore calling upon members of our community who may have information concerning the charges in this Indictment, or similar allegations involving this Defendant, to provide that information to Homeland Security Investigations.”

The implications of Reyes’ alleged actions are particularly disturbing given his position within the school system. “The Defendant’s role within the school system placed him in a position of authority, and the allegations against him, if proven, would represent a profound abuse of that trust,” said HSI Chicago Special Agent in Charge Matthew Scarpino. “HSI is committed to working with our law enforcement partners to ensure that those who prey upon children are held accountable and brought to justice.”

It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is not a conviction. Reyes is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. However, if convicted, the charges carry severe penalties. The exploitation count carries a minimum sentence of 15 years in federal prison, with a potential maximum of 30 years. Distribution could result in a minimum of 5 years and a maximum of 20 years behind bars, and possession carries a maximum sentence of 20 years.

The investigation is being led by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), with vital support from the Hammond Police Department, the Indiana State Police Internet Crimes against Children Unit (ICAC), and the Hammond City School District. Assistant United States Attorney Nadia Wardrip is prosecuting the case. Anyone with information related to the charges or potential victims is urged to contact Homeland Security Investigations at 1-877-4-HSI-TIP. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking within communities and the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable children.
