A Hampton man was sentenced to five years and three months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm, announced the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.
Jerry Stull, 56, of Hampton, made headlines after being involved in an argument with a security guard outside the Alley nightclub in Newport News on July 9, 2023. The heated exchange escalated, and Stull lifted his shirt, pointed at the guard, before fleeing the scene. When a nearby Newport News Police officer was alerted that Stull had a gun, a pursuit ensued, and the officer apprehended Stull. A 9mm handgun was found on the defendant.
Stull’s record is marred by numerous previous convictions, including grand larcenies, assault and battery, assault on a law enforcement officer, possession and distribution of controlled substances, child neglect, and five DUIs. The Hampton resident was on supervised probation at the time of his arrest.
As a previously convicted felon, Stull is barred from possessing firearms or ammunition. The U.S. Attorney’s Office emphasized that this conviction is yet another example of the consequences of violating federal firearms laws.
U.S. Attorney Jessica D. Aber praised the efforts of law enforcement, saying, ‘Today’s sentence is a testament to the tireless work of our law enforcement partners in keeping our communities safe from those who would recklessly endanger them.’
Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Alyson C. Yates led the prosecution of the case, with assistance from Special Assistant U.S. Attorneys Alyssa Levey-Weinstein and Marcus Johnson.
In a statement, ATF Special Agent in Charge Craig Kailimai added, ‘The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is committed to ensuring our communities are protected from the dangers of illegal firearms.’
The sentencing was announced by Senior U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson. A copy of the press release can be found on the U.S. Attorney’s Office website for the Eastern District of Virginia.
