ASSAULT CHARGE ROCKS NEW MEXICO COMMUNITY
A 19-year-old Navajo man, Harley Etcitty, has been charged with a violent crime after allegedly assaulting two individuals with a knife in Shiprock, New Mexico.
According to the indictment, on October 9, 2022, Etcitty allegedly assaulted two victims, identified as Victim 1 and Victim 2 in the indictment, with a knife. Victim 1 was seriously injured and had to be transferred to Flagstaff for a higher level of care. Victim 2 received multiple lacerations which required sutures.
Etcitty, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, will remain in custody pending a detention hearing scheduled for June 6, 2023. If convicted, he faces a minimum of 10 years in prison.
The FBI Farmington Agency investigated this case with assistance from the Navajo Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Matthew J. McGinley is prosecuting the case.
An indictment is only an allegation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
Etcitty is currently being held in custody, awaiting the outcome of his case. The community is left to wonder what led to this violent incident and what the outcome will be for the alleged perpetrator.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of community safety and the need for robust law enforcement presence in areas prone to violent crime.
In related news, the Navajo Nation has implemented various programs aimed at reducing violent crime and promoting community cohesion.
