BROWNSVILLE, Texas – A brazen daylight robbery of a Bank of America branch in Harlingen landed 34-year-old Adrian Paul Ross a 42-month federal prison sentence, U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Patrick announced today. Ross, who pleaded guilty November 29, 2017, finally faced the music after a years-long legal battle.
U.S. District Judge Andrew S. Hanen delivered the sentence, factoring in Ross’s documented mental health history. However, leniency wasn’t the order of the day. In addition to the 42-month term, Ross will serve three years of supervised release upon his eventual freedom. The judge also mandated mental health treatment during his incarceration – a small concession to a man who admitted wrongdoing.
The crime unfolded on May 26, 2017, at the Bank of America located on Van Buren Street. Ross entered the bank disguised with a baseball cap and sunglasses, attempting to blend in with the lunchtime crowd. He waited his turn, then approached a teller, initially feigning an intent to make a deposit. It was a ruse. He then flashed a message on his smartphone screen: “EMPTY OUT YOUR DRAWER,” written in all capital letters – a crude, digital demand.
The teller, complying with the threat, handed over the cash in her drawer, but crucially, also triggered the silent alarm. Ross didn’t remain long enough to count his ill-gotten gains. He fled the scene, but a swift response from law enforcement, specifically the FBI and Harlingen Police Department, led to his quick apprehension. The amount of money stolen was not disclosed.
Ross reportedly expressed remorse at the hearing, acknowledging his criminal conduct and offering an apology. But apologies ring hollow when weighed against the fear he instilled in bank employees and the disruption he caused. The investigation, a joint effort between the FBI and Harlingen Police, brought a clear message: bank robbery won’t be tolerated in South Texas.
Ross remains in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility. The specific location has not yet been determined, but one thing is certain: Adrian Paul Ross will have plenty of time to reflect on his choices behind bars. This case serves as a stark reminder that even seemingly simple crimes carry serious consequences.”
