SAVANNAH, GA – In a brazen display of disregard for public safety, 36-year-old Harold Childers and 20-year-old Lavontay Gatson, both of Savannah, were arrested on federal charges last week for their roles in two separate bomb threats.
According to law enforcement officials, the first incident occurred on September 18, 2012, at Southern States Phosphates on East President Street in Savannah. Childers allegedly made a false statement to FBI agents regarding the threat.
The second incident took place on March 2, 2013, when Gatson telephoned a Wal-Mart in Savannah and made a bomb threat. Both men are now facing serious consequences for their actions.
Childers is charged with making a false statement to FBI agents, a crime that carries a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Gatson, on the other hand, is charged with telephoning a bomb threat, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
U.S. Attorney Ed Tarver emphasized that a criminal complaint is only an accusation and is not evidence of guilt. The defendants are entitled to a fair trial, during which it will be the Government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
The FBI conducted the investigations that led to the arrests, and Assistant United States Attorney Charlie Bourne is prosecuting the case on behalf of the United States. For additional information, please contact First Assistant United States Attorney James D. Durham at (912) 201-2547.
The people of Savannah can rest a little easier knowing that these individuals are behind bars and facing justice. As a community, we must remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
