Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara Announces Sentencing of Haroon Aswat
Haroon Aswat, a co-conspirator of Abu Hamza, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for terrorism offenses in Manhattan Federal Court on [March 30, 2015].
According to the indictment, Aswat conspired with Abu Hamza, Ouassama Kassir, and Earnest James Ujaama to establish a terrorist training camp in the United States to support al Qaeda, a foreign terrorist organization designated by the U.S. Secretary of State.
In 1999, Aswat traveled to Oregon to assist in establishing the camp, where men were trained to fight jihad. He also possessed a compact disc containing instructions on how to make bombs and poisons.
U.S. District Court Judge Katherine B. Forrest sentenced Aswat to 20 years in prison for conspiring to provide material support to al Qaeda and providing material support to the organization.
Assistant Attorney General for National Security John P. Carlin stated that Aswat’s sentence is the result of law enforcement efforts to hold accountable those who wish to harm the United States.
The case is a reminder that justice in international terrorism cases continues to be delivered in American civilian courts.
