Harpushpinder Singh, a 46-year-old Indian citizen residing in Richmond Hill, Queens, was sentenced to time served for alien smuggling in a New York court.
Singh, a convicted alien smuggler, was found guilty after a trial in October 2016 for transporting two Indian citizens who were in the country illegally. The pair was picked up from Champlain, New York, and was being transported until Singh encountered a Border Patrol immigration checkpoint on Interstate 87 in North Hudson, New York.
Singh was arrested on June 12, 2016, and was subsequently incarcerated. As part of his sentence issued by U.S. District Judge Mae A. D’Agostino, Singh will also serve one year of post-imprisonment supervised release.
The case was investigated by the United States Border Patrol and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas Collyer.
According to sources, Singh’s crime was a serious offense that put the lives of his victims at risk. The court’s decision to sentence him to time served was seen as a lenient punishment by some, who believed that Singh’s actions warranted a harsher sentence.
However, U.S. Attorney Richard S. Hartunian and Chief Patrol Agent John C. Pfeifer, United States Border Patrol, Swanton Sector, praised the court’s decision, saying that it marked a significant milestone in their efforts to combat alien smuggling in the region.
The case serves as a reminder of the dangers of alien smuggling and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes. It also highlights the need for increased vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies to prevent such crimes from occurring in the future.
