A local man has been convicted of tax evasion, with the U.S. Attorney’s office alleging he failed to pay federal income taxes on over $438,877 in income.
Troy Hester, 42, of Hartford, pleaded guilty to one count of tax evasion in Bridgeport federal court yesterday, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s office.
The investigation, led by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation Division, revealed that Hester submitted fraudulent W-4 forms while employed by the Metropolitan District Commission, claiming numerous exemptions and resulting in little or no money being withheld from his wages.
During the 2008 through 2013 tax years, Hester paid little or no federal income taxes on his income, resulting in a federal tax loss of approximately $70,480, according to court documents and statements made in court.
Hester is scheduled to be sentenced on August 11, 2015, by U.S. District Judge Alvin W. Thompson in Hartford. He faces a maximum term of imprisonment of five years, a fine of up to $250,000, and is required to pay all back taxes, plus interest and penalties.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Susan Wines.
Hester’s conviction marks a major blow to those who seek to evade their tax responsibilities, said a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s office. ‘Tax evasion is a serious crime that undermines the very fabric of our society,’ they added.
