A Lebanese student has been charged with possessing a firearm in Ohio. Hassan Ajram, 29, of Lebanon, was accused of being in possession of a Sig Sauer 9 mm pistol on February 10.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, Ajram was admitted to the U.S. on an F-1 student visa and was found to be in possession of the firearm.
The case is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael J. Freeman, and the investigating agency is the U.S. Border Patrol and Department of Homeland Security.
Ajram is charged with being an alien in possession of a firearm that traveled in interstate or foreign commerce. If convicted, the defendant’s sentence will be determined by the Court after reviewing factors unique to this case, including the defendant’s prior criminal record, if any, the defendant’s role in the offense, and the characteristics of the violation.
In all cases, the sentence will not exceed the statutory maximum, and in most cases, it will be less than the maximum.
Ajram’s status as a student with an F-1 visa and his possession of a firearm has raised questions about the implications for international students in the U.S.
The case is ongoing, and Ajram is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
