TULSA, OK – Hatcher Raymond Day, 27, of Phoenix, Arizona, is facing a long stretch behind bars after being sentenced to 20 years and 8 months in federal prison for a brazen fentanyl trafficking operation in Tulsa. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Jack Zouhary, sends a clear message: bringing poison into Oklahoma carries severe consequences.
Day received 188 months for possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute and being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. An additional 60 months were added for possessing firearms in furtherance of his drug trafficking crime. The sentences will run consecutively, followed by five years of supervised release. The bust, a joint effort between the Tulsa Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), ripped the lid off a scheme to saturate the city with the deadly opioid.
According to court records, Tulsa Police received a tip in September 2022 that Day was peddling fentanyl pills from a short-term rental property booked through Airbnb. Undercover work quickly confirmed the tip, leading to a search warrant for the location. When officers stormed the Airbnb on September 19, 2022, they found a terrifying stash: over 8,000 fentanyl pills, weighing a staggering 888 grams. The haul was accompanied by five firearms and a mountain of ammunition.
But the story didn’t end with the drugs. A check of the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database revealed that four of the five firearms were stolen. Day, a convicted felon, was already legally prohibited from possessing any firearms. This added another layer of severity to the charges, illustrating the reckless disregard for the law that fueled his operation. U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson stated, “Hatcher came to Tulsa from Arizona for the express purpose of flooding our area with fentanyl.”
“We are committed to bringing down operations that peddle drugs and endanger our community,” Johnson continued. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Nathan Michel and Kenneth Elmore. The lengthy sentence serves as a stark warning to anyone considering bringing illicit drugs into Oklahoma. The ATF’s Dallas Field Division played a key role in the investigation, working alongside Tulsa PD to build a solid case against Day.
This case highlights the ongoing struggle against the fentanyl crisis and the increasingly dangerous combination of drug trafficking and illegal firearms. While one trafficker is off the streets, the fight continues. Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and report on the efforts of law enforcement to keep Oklahoma communities safe from the scourge of fentanyl and gun violence.
