Hate Crime Conspirator Pleads Guilty
A 21-year-old Staten Island man has pleaded guilty to conspiring to assault African-American residents in retaliation for President Barack Obama’s presidential win, according to a guilty plea entered in Brooklyn federal court.
Brian Carranza, 21, faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for his role in the hate crime conspiracy, which targeted African-American residents in Staten Island.
The case is being investigated by the FBI and the New York City Police Department, with the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York leading the prosecution. Special Litigation Counsel Kristy Parker and Assistant U.S. Attorney Pamela Chen are handling the case.
Carranza’s guilty plea comes after acting Assistant Attorney General Loretta King and U.S. Attorney Benton J. Campbell announced the charges against him.
The hate crime conspiracy was reportedly motivated by President Obama’s win in last year’s presidential election, with the conspirators seeking to intimidate and assault African-American residents in retaliation.
A sentencing date for Carranza has not been set by the court, but he faces the maximum 10-year prison sentence and the $250,000 fine if convicted.
The case highlights the ongoing issue of hate crimes in the United States and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
