Hazel Eileen Diaz, a 51-Year-Old Detective, Arrested in Eagle Pass

DEL RIO – Hazel Eileen Diaz, a detective with the Eagle Pass Police Department, was taken into custody in Eagle Pass today on charges related to her alleged involvement in a conspiracy to harbor undocumented noncitizens. Diaz, 51, is facing one count of conspiracy to harbor illegal aliens, as outlined in Title 8, United States Code, Section 1324.

According to the indictment, Diaz conspired with Tomas Alejandro Mendez, 26, and Paola Nikole Cazares, 20, both from Eagle Pass, to harbor undocumented noncitizens. Mendez and Cazares were previously arrested on August 26, 2021, and have been in federal custody since then.

On December 8, 2021, Diaz, Mendez, and Cazares were charged by superseding indictment with the conspiracy count. If convicted, the defendants could face up to 10 years in prison, as determined by a federal district court judge considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The FBI, with assistance from Homeland Security Investigations, is leading the investigation into the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Kam is prosecuting the case.

An indictment is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

The Western District of Texas U.S. Attorney Ashley C. Hoff, along with FBI Special Agent in Charge Christopher Combs, made the announcement regarding Diaz’s arrest.

Diaz’s alleged involvement in the conspiracy has raised concerns about law enforcement involvement in harboring undocumented individuals. The case is ongoing, and further details will be released as more information becomes available.
