Heberto Martinez, Fentanyl Distribution, New York 2021

Fentanyl Trafficking Plagues Northern Ulster County

In a major blow to the opioid trade, Heberto Martinez, a 38-year-old Guatemalan citizen residing in Lynn, Massachusetts, was sentenced to 51 months in prison for distributing fentanyl. This disturbing trend has been ravaging communities in northern Ulster County, and the sentencing of Martinez marks a significant victory in the fight against fentanyl trafficking.

According to the United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman, Martinez was part of a Boston-based drug trafficking organization that smuggled 1.1 kilograms of a fentanyl mixture from Lynn to redistributors in northern Ulster County between October 2020 and March 2021.

The investigation was led by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the Ulster Regional Gang Enforcement Narcotics Team (URGENT) with assistance from the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Emmet O’Hanlon successfully prosecuted the case.

Martinez was taken into custody by HSI and URGENT investigators on March 22, 2021, and has remained incarcerated ever since.

As part of his guilty plea, Martinez will face a 2-year term of supervised release upon his release from prison, contingent upon his removal from the United States.

This sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of fentanyl trafficking and the tireless efforts of law enforcement agencies in combating this menace.
