Mail Theft Ring Busted in Anchorage
Three Anchorage residents have been charged in a 22-count indictment related to a mail theft ring that stole checks from unsuspecting victims.
According to the indictment, Amber Hecker, 34, Ronald Hecker, 35, and Richard Hoglin, 34, all of Anchorage, negotiated checks stolen from the mail that were falsely altered and forged. The stolen checks were made out to separate stolen identities that were used by the defendants to negotiate the stolen checks.
The defendants also used bank accounts associated with the stolen identities to negotiate the stolen and forged checks. It is alleged that the defendants possessed mail stolen from over 500 victims, including financial records, social security cards, identification cards, and credit cards.
The investigation was conducted by the Anchorage Police Department, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and Anchorage Airport Police. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Aunnie Steward.
The indictment charges the defendants with conspiracy, bank fraud, possession of stolen mail, and aggravated identity theft. If convicted, the defendants face a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison and a fine of $1 million, or both.
A press conference is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. today at the Federal Courthouse, following the 1:30 p.m. hearing for Amber Hecker and the 2:30 p.m. hearing for Ronald Hecker.
