Defendant Admits to Taking Bribes from Inmates
ELKINS, WEST VIRGINIA – The dark underbelly of a federal corrections institution in West Virginia has been exposed, as a former corrections officer has admitted to taking bribes from inmates.
Hector Lopez, a 41-year-old man from Weston, West Virginia, has pled guilty to bribery of a public official. According to court documents, Lopez accepted $40,000 in payments from or on behalf of inmates as payment for smuggling contraband into the prison.
The brazen corruption scheme, which has left many in the community stunned, has led to Lopez facing up to 15 years in federal prison. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
The investigation into Lopez’s activities was led by the Office of Inspector General. Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Cogar is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.
Lopez’s actions not only put the safety of the inmates and corrections officers at risk but also undermined the integrity of the corrections system. The community is left to wonder how such corruption was allowed to fester within the institution.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of accountability and transparency within our institutions. As the investigation and prosecution of Lopez continue, the community can only hope that justice will be served and that those responsible will be held accountable for their actions.
A federal magistrate judge, Michael John Aloi, presided over the proceedings. The outcome of the case will be closely watched by law enforcement officials and the community, as it serves as a warning to those who would seek to exploit their positions for personal gain.
