In a shocking turn of events, Henry Quaysean Thomas, age 40, of Florence, has entered a guilty plea in federal court on charges of possession with intent to distribute marijuana and crack cocaine, a violation of Title 21, United States Code, Section 841(a)(1) and 841(b)(1)(C).
According to United States Attorney Beth Drake, Thomas pled guilty on Monday in federal court in Florence. United States District Judge R. Bryan Harwell of Florence accepted the plea and will impose sentence after he has reviewed the presentence report which will be prepared by the U.S. Probation Office.
The evidence presented at the change of plea hearing revealed a disturbing pattern of drug trafficking. On May 18, 2016, members of the Florence County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant on a room at a local Florence hotel, where Thomas was arrested. Officers seized 78 grams of marijuana, 7 grams of crack cocaine, and $930 in cash.
The search warrant was based on previous controlled buys of illegal narcotics from Thomas at that location. Thomas later admitted to law enforcement that he was selling illegal drugs from that location, providing a damning indictment of his own guilt.
Ms. Drake stated that the maximum penalty Thomas can receive is a fine of $250,000 and/or imprisonment for 20 years, plus a special assessment of $100. This sentence will be determined after the presentence report is reviewed, and will likely have a significant impact on Thomas’s future.
The case was investigated by agents of the Florence County Sheriff’s Office, with Assistant United States Attorney Buddy Bethea of the Florence office handling the case. The guilty plea is a result of the tireless efforts of law enforcement and the judicial system to bring those involved in drug trafficking to justice.
The guilty plea of Henry Quaysean Thomas serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle against drug trafficking in our communities. The case highlights the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the judicial system in bringing perpetrators to justice. As the case moves forward, it will be interesting to see how the sentence is handed down and what impact it will have on the community.
In the meantime, the people of Florence can take comfort in knowing that one more individual involved in the illicit drug trade has been brought to justice. The conviction of Henry Quaysean Thomas is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement and the judicial system to protecting our communities from the scourge of drug trafficking.
