A convicted armed robber has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for his role in a string of Treasure Coast bank robberies.

Herbert Lenorris Smith, Jr., 37, of West Palm Beach, Florida, was sentenced on May 20, 2014, by U.S. District Judge Jose E. Martinez for his involvement in two counts of interfering with commerce by robbery, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1951(a) and 2, and using and carrying a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 924(c)(1)(A)(ii) and 2.

The robberies took place between June 8, 2013, and July 8, 2013, at five PNC bank branches in Indian River, Volusia, Hillsborough, and St. Lucie counties. In the robberies, three masked men, armed with handguns, would enter the banks, jump the teller counters, and demand money.

The investigation, led by the FBI, involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Port St. Lucie Police Department, St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, and Indian River Sheriff’s Office. The suspects were identified through a combination of forensic evidence and eyewitness accounts.

Smith, who pleaded guilty on January 29, 2014, was one of several individuals involved in the robberies. The others, including Anthony Isaac Johnson, Paul Edward Moore, and Alan Demetrius Bradford, have also been charged and are awaiting sentencing.
