HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Another dealer off the streets, but for how long? Robert Lee Taylor, 44, of Huntington, received three years and five months in federal prison today, followed by three years of supervised release, for peddling heroin and thumbing his nose at the court while already on release for other drug offenses. The sentence, handed down by United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers, barely scratches the surface of the damage Taylor inflicted on this community.
The bust went down on March 19, 2025, when law enforcement executed a search warrant at a Huntington residence. They didn’t find a hobbyist’s stash. We’re talking 104 grams of heroin, three digital scales for precise measuring, and enough plastic bags to package poison for widespread distribution. Taylor admitted to owning the heroin and intending to push it onto the streets. The evidence doesn’t lie.
But it wasn’t just the quantity. Taylor was actively dealing, caught red-handed selling approximately 7 grams of heroin to a confidential informant for $491 just one day before the raid – right there on the back deck of his Huntington home. A brazen operation, conducted in plain sight. This wasn’t some fly-by-night operation; it was a calculated effort to profit from addiction.
And the money? Law enforcement seized $8,661 in cash during the search, which Taylor readily admitted was dirty money – proceeds from his heroin sales. It’s a small fortune built on misery and ruined lives. While some of that cash will be forfeited, it won’t bring back the damage done. It’s a pittance compared to the cost of addiction and the lives destroyed.
What makes this case particularly galling is that Taylor was already on supervised release. He’d previously pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl in United States District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia on May 1, 2023. Eight months of today’s sentence are directly tied to him committing a new crime while supposedly under the watchful eye of the system. Clearly, supervision wasn’t enough to deter him.
Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston announced the sentencing, praising the DEA and the Violent Crime and Drug Task Force West for their work. Assistant United States Attorney Courtney L. Finney prosecuted the case. A press release is available on the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia website, and related court documents can be found on PACER under Case No. 3:25-cr-74. While we applaud the conviction, the question remains: will this sentence be enough to keep Taylor from returning to his old ways? Only time will tell.
