United States Attorney Beth Drake announced that Christopher Lee Holton, 29, of West Columbia, has been sentenced to one year in federal prison for failing to register as a sex offender, a violation of 18 U.S.C. § 2250(a).
Holton was convicted and sentenced for Molesting a Child and Sexual Misconduct with a Minor in Indiana, which mandated registration under the Sex Offender Registration Act (SORNA). Holton initially registered in Indiana upon his release in January 2015 but failed to update his information after moving to South Carolina.
In August 2016, Holton was located in West Columbia after having lived there for eight months without registering. He pleaded guilty on March 2, 2017, and was sentenced by Judge Mary Geiger Lewis to one year imprisonment followed by five years of Supervised Release.
The case was investigated by the United States Marshal Service (USMS) and the Whitley County Sheriff’s Office (Indiana). Assistant United States Attorney William E. Day II prosecuted the case.
United States District Judge Mary Geiger Lewis of Columbia presided over Holton’s sentencing, which brought an end to a saga that began with a failure to comply with SORNA requirements and culminated in federal charges and imprisonment.
