A 32-year-old Homestead felon has been indicted on federal charges of violating firearms laws, according to the United States Attorney’s office in Pittsburgh.
Michael William Horvwalt, formerly of Homestead, PA, is accused of possessing a firearm and ammunition on or about January 8, 2019, despite his prior felony convictions.
Under federal law, a felon is prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition.
The indictment, which was announced by United States Attorney Scott W. Brady, carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both.
Assistant United States Attorney Ross E. Lenhardt is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.
The United States Probation Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) conducted the investigation leading to the indictment.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime through a collaborative effort between law enforcement, community leaders, and other stakeholders.
An information is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
Horvwalt’s bond and detention status is currently unknown.
The indictment comes as part of a broader effort to combat violent crime in the Pittsburgh area.
The Pittsburgh community is still reeling from the effects of violent crime, and this indictment serves as a reminder that law enforcement is committed to holding perpetrators accountable.
