A Honduran man who used stolen ID documents to work in the US has been sentenced to 102 days in prison. Ramon Calderon-Rivera, 37, pleaded guilty to unlawful use of identification documents in a Cedar Rapids federal court.
According to the Department of Justice, Calderon-Rivera used a fake Social Security card and California driver’s license to prove his authorization to work in the country when he completed employment and tax forms at a business in Iowa in November 2023.
The ID documents were found to be fake, with the Social Security card number assigned to someone else. Social Security cards and driver’s licenses are crucial documents that prove a person’s identity and authorization to work in the US.
Calderon-Rivera’s sentence was handed down by Chief Judge C.J. Williams in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa. In addition to the prison term, he was also sentenced to three years of supervised release after serving his time.
The case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration, eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protecting communities from violent crime.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Anthony Morfitt and investigated by the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Enforcement and Removal Operations.
Calderon-Rivera’s guilty plea and subsequent sentence serve as a reminder of the consequences of using fake ID documents to work in the US. The use of such documents can have serious consequences, including fines, imprisonment, and deportation.
