NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA – Another border breach, another federal sentence. Olger Rene Maldonado-Santos, a 29-year-old Honduran national, learned the hard way that illegally returning to the United States carries serious consequences. He was sentenced September 9, 2025, for the crime of illegal reentry of a removed alien, a violation of Title 8, United States Code, Section 1326.
Court records reveal Maldonado-Santos wasn’t a first-time offender when it came to immigration law. He slipped back into the country sometime before May 17, 2025, brazenly disregarding a prior removal order issued around February 14, 2018. Federal authorities didn’t detail how he re-entered, but the fact remains: he ignored the system and attempted to circumvent the law.
U.S. District Judge Wendy B. Vitter wasn’t impressed with Maldonado-Santos’s disregard for the law. After receiving credit for time already served, the Judge remanded Maldonado-Santos into the custody of the United States Marshals. But the jail time isn’t the end of the line. Following his term of imprisonment, he will be handed over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for formal removal proceedings, consistent with the Immigration and Nationality Act. Expect a swift deportation back to Honduras.
Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson, predictably, lauded the work of the agencies involved. “This case demonstrates our commitment to enforcing our immigration laws and securing our borders,” Simpson stated. The Bureau of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) provided the investigative muscle, tracking down and apprehending Maldonado-Santos. It’s a standard statement, but it underscores the ongoing federal focus on border security.
Assistant United States Attorney Irene González, of the General Crimes Unit, prosecuted the case. González is a seasoned prosecutor, and this conviction adds to her record of successfully bringing immigration offenders to justice. This isn’t glamorous work, but it’s the unglamorous backbone of federal law enforcement.
The case serves as a stark reminder: attempting to bypass U.S. immigration laws carries significant penalties, including imprisonment and deportation.
