A Hot Springs man is facing up to 20 years in prison for passing counterfeit twenty dollar bills at local stores in Rapid City.
Jeffrey Walsh, 35, pleaded guilty on January 28, 2013, to uttering counterfeit obligations of the United States.
The case involved Walsh passing counterfeit twenty dollar bills at several stores in Rapid City, including Best Buy, Bed Bath & Beyond, Scheels All Sports, and Blockbuster, in August 2012.
The investigation into the case was a collaborative effort between the United States Secret Service, Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Rapid City Police Department, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Chadron Police Department in Nebraska.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Wayne Venhuizen is prosecuting the case, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years of imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.
A presentence investigation was ordered, and a sentencing date was set for June 7, 2013. Walsh was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending sentencing.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of being vigilant when it comes to counterfeit currency and the consequences of passing it.
