Insurance Scam Exposed
A Houston businessman has been sentenced to 24 months in federal prison for his role in an insurance fraud scheme at Lake Livingston in Texas.
Robert Lance Kuperman, 74, pleaded guilty to interstate transportation of money by fraud in March 2021 and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Thad Heartfield on [date].
Kuperman was ordered to pay over $1.8 million in restitution, including $412,836.12 to American Strategic Insurance Company and an additional $1,445,000.00 to RSUI Indemnity Group.
The scheme involved Kuperman submitting a fraudulent insurance claim in July 2015 for water damage to his home on Lake Livingston, which he attributed to a defective water heater.
As part of the claim, Kuperman submitted fake documentation to support his request for reimbursement of personal property damaged in the leak.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, and the Texas State Fire Marshal’s Office investigated the case, with Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Tommy L. Coleman and Assistant U.S. Attorney Donald S. Carter prosecuting the case.
Acting U.S. Attorney Nicholas Ganjei praised the work of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies in bringing the case to a successful conclusion.
“Fraud victimizes not only the insurance companies, but costs Americans billions of dollars every year in increased premiums,” Ganjei stated.
