Houston Honduran Sentenced to 5 Years for Repeat Illegal Entry
A 33-year-old Honduran national who called Houston home has been sentenced for illegally reentering the United States, announced U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei.
Denis Hernandez-Cruz pleaded guilty to the crime on April 11, and U.S. District Judge Charles R. Eskridge has now ordered Hernandez-Cruz to serve 60 months in federal prison. As a non-U.S. citizen, he is expected to face removal proceedings following his imprisonment.
The court handed down the sentence with the intention of deterring Hernandez-Cruz from committing the crime again. His prior felony convictions for illegal reentry as well as two convictions for burglary of a habitation weigh heavily on the decision.
Hernandez-Cruz has three prior removals from the United States, the most recent being in April 2020. This case is a prime example of the consequences of repeat offenders who continue to disregard U.S. immigration laws.
Immigrations and Customs Enforcement – Enforcement and Removal Operations conducted the investigation, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Anthony Franklyn prosecuted the case. This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that aims to repel the invasion of illegal immigration and protect our communities from violent crime.
The Department of Justice has marshaled the full resources of the agency to achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and this case is a testament to that commitment.
Hernandez-Cruz will remain in custody pending transfer to a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility, where he will serve his 60-month sentence. His case is a stark reminder of the consequences of committing crimes against the United States.
