HOUSTON – Talib Smith, 21, will spend the next three decades of his life behind bars after receiving a 300-month federal sentence for the horrific kidnapping and carjacking of a 73-year-old Houston woman. The attack, which culminated in Smith kicking the victim into a local bayou, left her with multiple severe injuries and lasting trauma, according to court testimony.
The brutal incident unfolded on May 16, 2023, when Smith broke into the victim’s home, seeking the keys to her vehicle. He didn’t just want the car; he wanted everything. Once inside, he immediately restrained the woman, blindfolding and binding her hands and feet. He then escalated the violence, choking her with an electrical cord and stuffing a cloth into her mouth to silence her pleas for help. The demand for cash and keys was just the beginning.
Smith forced the victim into the trunk of her own car, but she began to lose consciousness during the ordeal. In a chilling display of callousness, Smith then removed her from the trunk – believing her to be dead – and repeatedly kicked her, sending her tumbling into a nearby bayou. Miraculously, the woman managed to pull herself from the water and seek help at a nearby apartment, where a concerned resident called 911.
Authorities quickly recovered the stolen vehicle at a gas station, but Smith fled the scene, eventually abandoning the car and continuing his escape on foot. When apprehended, he was found to be in possession of the victim’s cash, phone, and even the key to her safety deposit box. Adding another layer of depravity to the crime, investigators discovered Smith had recorded himself during the kidnapping and brazenly posted the video of his escape on social media.
U.S. District Judge Sim Lake delivered the sentence on June 6, after Smith pleaded guilty. The court heard detailed accounts of the victim’s suffering and the lasting psychological impact of the attack. U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei announced the sentencing, noting the investigation was a joint effort between the FBI and the Houston Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jill Jenkins Stotts prosecuted the case. This sentencing follows a delay in publicizing the case due to a recent government shutdown, but is now available following the resumption of normal operations.
Smith will remain in federal custody pending transfer to a Federal Bureau of Prison facility. While 25 years may offer some measure of justice, the scars – both physical and emotional – inflicted on this elderly woman will likely last a lifetime. This case serves as a stark reminder of the violence that can erupt even in seemingly quiet neighborhoods, and the importance of swift and severe consequences for those who prey on the vulnerable.
