That’s how 55-year-old James Michael Wallace decided to fund his life on February 28, 2025, when he robbed a KeyBank branch on Woodstock Avenue. Today, Wallace learned that decision will cost him the next 12 years and 7 months of his life.
Wallace was sentenced to 151 months in federal prison and five years of supervised release after pleading guilty to one count of Armed Bank Robbery. The sentence reflects not only the severity of this crime but also Wallace’s status as a “career offender” – a repeat criminal with a history of preying on financial institutions. He’s been down this road before.
According to court documents, Wallace didn’t bother with subtlety. He walked into the KeyBank, approached a teller, and pressed a loaded firearm directly against the teller’s torso, demanding cash. He made off with $856, but carelessly left his weapon behind – a mistake that ultimately sealed his fate. The gun is now evidence, and Wallace is trading freedom for a cell.
What makes this case particularly galling for federal authorities is that Wallace was already on federal supervision for a prior federal bank robbery conviction at the time of this latest offense. Apparently, a previous stint in prison didn’t deter him from returning to his criminal habits. The system gave him a chance, and he spat in its face.
Beyond the prison sentence, Wallace has been ordered to pay restitution totaling $6,437. This covers the losses stemming from not only this specific robbery, but also previous crimes he’s committed. It’s a small price to pay for the fear he instilled in the teller and the disruption he caused, but it’s a step towards accountability.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Portland Police Bureau and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Katherine A. Rykken successfully prosecuted the case, securing a sentence that sends a clear message: armed bank robbery will not be tolerated in Oregon, and repeat offenders will face the full weight of the law.
